We are kicking off our stitch marker / village income generation project! Namdrol, our Tibetan colleague, will be heading up to the Plateau any day now to select the first participants to receive training. Once they've learned the process and perfected their technique, he'll be handing over the beads and wire and commissioning them to make a few hundred sets of stitch markers for us as a trial run.
Here are the four designs we decided to start with, made from a combination of Tibetan prayer beads and beads from traditional jewelry. My favorite is the one with the black and white stone with "eyes" in it - these "tze" stones were traditionally believe to protect the wearer from poison. Maybe they'll protect the knitter from dropped stitches?
